The High Middle Ages saw a growing fiscal and legal structure in England and a move from the old Celtic traditions in Scotland. It also saw bloodshed and turmoil as the rule of government changed hands.

The Norman conquest of England

The invasion of England by the Normans in 1066 is one of the most famous dates in British history. It marked a turning point when English culture, language and people would be forever merged with France.

At the heart of the invasion lay the fact that Edward the Confessor had died without an heir of his own body. Three men now vied for the throne: Harold Godwinson, earl of Wessex, Harald Hardrada, king of Norway, and William, duke of Normandy.
